those wretched things they say in movies

Aah fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck! I'm getting slightly obsessed with this whole blogging for no one thing. But still I like penning my thoughts down, its like hearing myself think.

So I thought I'd write about movies. I am in fact a self-professed film critic and movie junkie, but for the first time I guess, I'm not about to write a film review or a 'best of' list. But sometimes I hate movies, especially the warm, sentimental ones that make you laugh and cry at the same time, the ones with those utterly romantic or the amazingly inspiring dialogs. They make you feel grossly inadequate, for the simple reason is that you know that no one is ever going to say those to you. But thats why we see movies like these. Not simply to get away from the real world, but make the real world more liveable.

Here are some of those aww inducing quotes which I can think of at the moment.

I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” - Harry Burns (Billy Crystal), When Harry Met Sally

I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you're always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it that you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all." ~ Katarina Stratford (Julia Stiles) in "Ten Things I Hate About You" (1999). (see even mediocre movies have good quotes)

I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me… but it’s hard to stay mad, when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst… And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can’t feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life… You have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m sure. But don’t worry… you will someday.
American Beauty

And then there are movies in which almost every single goddamn line is quotable

The Shawshank Redemption
Sometimes it makes me sad, though... Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

Get busy living, or get busy dying

Forrest Gump
Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away. (yes this shit always gets me all teared up)

Life's a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get.

Titanic
Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me… it brought me to you … You must do me this honor, Rose. Promise me you’ll survive. That you won’t give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.”

I'm the king of the world!

Jerry Maguire
You… complete me.”

'You had me at hello'.

The Pursuit of Happyness
You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can't do something themselves, they want to tell you that you can't do it. You want something? Go get it.

And this is one quote that is neither inspirational, nor romantic, but no list of quotes can ever go without it.
